Ishpeming Area Historical Society Cemetery Tour Returns For 2021

ISHPEMING, Mich – A local cemetery tour is returning this August.

The Ishpeming Area Historical Society Cemetery Tour will take place every Tuesday in August starting on August 3.

An additional event will be held Thursday, August 26th from 6:30 to 8 pm.

Attendees will get to learn more than in previous years during this third annual event.

“My first tour was done in 2017, the 100th anniversary of World War I. But then I just felt that there were a ton of people who were really big names back in the day, in the 1880s or 1900s and nobody has heard of them,” said Karen Kasper, the Vice President of the Ishpeming Area Historical Society. “A lot of mayors and people don’t know their names. So I started doing this because I knew a lot of these names and how they are connected to the city and how they fit into the city’s history.”

Kasper gave us a sneak peak of a few of Ishpeming’s notable natives that will be included during the walking tour.

“Expect a lot of walking because it is primarily a walking tour. They’re going to learn about about citizens of Ishpeming. This year we have Carl Tellefsen, one of the people who were instrumental in getting the sport of skiing established in Ishpeming. He is a part of the United States Skiing Hall of Fame. He is one of the members honored there,” Kasper said.  “They will learn about Horace Olin Young who was probably the only Ishpeming citizen to be elected to the US House of Representatives.”

Anyone interested in attending should meet at the Sexton’s office and are encouraged to bring a donation of $10 for the historical society.

Tours will be canceled in the case of inclement weather.
