Local electric company warns against scam calls

Scam calls have been surging in the eastern Upper Peninsula under the guise of a local electric company.

Cloverland Electric Cooperative is warning customers against a large scam where callers have been posing as representatives of the electric company and threatening to turn off electric service if a payment is not immediately paid over the phone.

Cloverland representatives reiterated that they do not take credit cards over the phone. Their billing is a secure, automated system. The number for that system is 844-843-6837.

In a recent press release, the company’s Chief Financial Officer, Lisa Castillo said, “We urge our members to report suspicious calls and adopt an attitude of ‘when in doubt, call member services to check it out.'”
