Local Artist Julie Highlen Has Works Displayed At Travel Marquette
MARQUETTE, Mich -A local artist is getting the chance to spotlight her art work tomorrow.
Travel Marquette will be holding a reception for artist Julie Highlen at their offices from 1-3 pm tomorrow.
Highlen’s Marquette–inspired artwork will be on display and she will answer questions from event participants.
“I like doing larger paintings. Some of them are still in my house, so it gave me a way of celebrating those paintings. I also wanted to feature some of the special U.P. features. There are some rock out croppings along Lake Superior that grabbed my attention,” Highlen said. “Of course I wanted to celebrate Marquette and the light in that we can pick wild blue berries within a half hour of where you live. So it was more of a way to celebrate the U.P.”
Making art has always been in Highlen’s life as she started coloring and sketching at a young age.
Some of her aunts were artists.
She said living in the U.P. provides many sources of inspiration.
“Playing with the paint is kind of fun. We did explore more out of state before we moved up here and now we seem to explore more locally,” Highlen said. “I can go out for a walk and get inspired. We can take a couple hour drive and be at the Porky’s or Copper Harbor. Just anywhere in the U.P. and there are so many places that inspire me to paint.”
Tomorrow will be the last day to view the artwork.
Highlen’s art can also be found at Zero Degrees Art Gallery, Open Wings Pottery and Gallery as well as at Art In Abundance.
