GWINN — The Upper Peninsula Animal Welfare Shelter’s scheduled Saint Patrick’s Day adoption event will still go on as planned on the 17th, but with some extra precautions to prevent the spread of COVID-19.

The St. Catty’s Day adoption event will take place from noon to 4:00 p.m. on March 17. All cats 6 months and older will be $17 to adopt.

UPAWS will be implementing a number system to reduce the number of people in the shelter at one time. Those interested in adopting a pet are asked to collect a number at the front door, wait in their car, and enter when their turn comes.

There are plenty of animals in need of homes, and with so many people home from work and school for the time being, now might be the perfect time to adopt.

“We had to put some precautions in place, but we really didn’t want to cancel the event because we really, really need adoptions right now,” said Volunteer and Community Outreach Coordinator Ann Brownell. “The more animals that we can get into homes the better. A lot of people are home right now, so it’s a perfect time to bring a pet in and share some love!”

UPAWS asks that only those seriously considering adopting a pet come in during this time. A full press release was posted on their Facebook page with more information about their operations in the coming weeks, and you can read that here.
