Organizations host Women’s Health Expo at Westwood high School
ISHPEMING — The first ever Women’s Health Expo was hosted at the Westwood high School by the Upper Peninsula Health Plan & U.P. Home Health & Hospice. These groups wanted to bring women together in the community to really focus on important topic regarding overall health.
“Women do have a tendency of putting their health on the back burner,” explained Kori Tossava, U.P. Home Health and Hospice Community Services Director. “This is something that we knew so with the educational presentations we could have it specifically focused on health.”
Kori also added, “When you get in here and just notice everybody really wants to put their health as a priority and really start taking that to the front of their mind.”
With over 300 registered individuals has shown that there is a serious interest in women’s health throughout Marquette County. Now the organizations are looking to see how to improve for next year’s expo.
“We are very pleased with the turnout so far,” said Kori. “We are very pleased with the use of the school and being able to have those classrooms and access to the gymnasium. So we will be coming back again next year with a lot of suggestions that we are going to be able to take with us. The first planning is great, but in execution is when we really figure out how we can make it better.”
It’s not only just women learning about women’s health either, men were invited and welcomed to come learn more about the health that can affect women in their lives as well.
“So there were topics that spanned both genders,” said Kori. “But at the same time you have a mother, a daughter or even a wife. So it is important to be able to make sure that they are also putting their health as a priority and to stick around.”
