Standby warming shelters in Marquette County during upcoming storm
MARQUETTE COUNTY — The Marquette County Emergency Management Office along with several township officials and NMU Public Safety have shelter sites on standby if there are extended power outages during the upcoming storm. They are as follows:
- Chocolay Township Fire Hall
- NMU — PEIF Building
- Negaunee Township Fire Hall
- Ishpeming Township Hall
Emergency Management Coordinator Teresa Schwalbach stated, “We are working with the American Red Cross to help with the shelter at the Dome. Fire department personnel will assist at their local township halls. The shelters are not open at this time. That will be determined by officials if outages are going to be fore an extended period. At this point, we ask people to plan ahead for any emergency. Make sure you have an emergency kit at home and in your car in case you do venture out and get stranded. They should include water, blankets, extra clothes, flashlight with extra batteries, first aid kit, snacks, empty tin to put candles in, matches, a crank radio, etc. If you have a back-up generator, make sure you have enough fuel for it.”
If you are out on the roads, have a full tank of gas and please leave at least three car lengths between you and the car in front of you. Also, be aware of the county plow trucks that are working to clear those roads and please slow down.
If the power does go out, the Emergency Management Office will be in contact with utility personnel from UPPCO and BLP for updates, and they are asking everyone to please be patient and plan ahead.
If there are outages, updates can be found on both the UPPCO and BLP websites. If you need emergency assistance, please call 911.
