MARQUETTE — While most people slept in to begin their Memorial Day weekend, a select few was up bright and early helping out at the grocery store.

The Superiorland Kiwanis Club spent their Saturday morning bagging groceries at Econofoods. Donations and receipts went towards the funding for the projects being done. The bagging is one of a few events they do year round.

“This is our main one; we also help out with the new Kiwanis group, handing out peanuts. And with the Ishpeming Kiwanis, we help out with their golf tournament,” said Kiwanis member Michael Apple. “One of the other things we support is athlete of the month, and then at the end of the year we choose the male and female athlete of the year, so it’s good recognition of the student athletes.”

The biggest project needing funds is their community Christmas dinner, where they offer a free meal to anyone who comes in on Christmas Day. Many different organizations bag groceries at Econofoods on weekends.
