Fatal Explosion/Fire under investigation in Newberry

NEWBERRY — The Luce County Sheriff’s Department is investigating a fatal fire/explosion that occurred Friday March 16th in Newberry.

Police report a 60 year old male from Newberry had been living in a bus on M-123 in McMillan Township when the bus caught fire and exploded. The victim received 2nd and 3rd degree burns to nearly 80% of his body.

Luce County EMS transported the victim to Helen Newberry Joy Hospital ER for treatment. The victim was then air lifted to the University of Michigan Burn Unit and later died due to his injuries.

The cause of the fire and explosion is still under investigation. The name of the victim is not being released at this time.
