One transported to hospital following snowmobile accident

NEGAUNEE — One man was transported to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries following a snowmobile accident in Negaunee.

The Marquette County Sheriff’s Office was dispatched to Snowmobile Trail #8 at the Carp River Bridge crossing for a single snowmobile crash at 12:07 p.m. Monday. Investigators revealed that the lone driver, 65 year-old Walter Sammut from Lupton, Michigan, was eastbound on the trail and was traveling too fast for conditions.

Sammut hit a number of bumps, causing him to lose control and fall off the vehicle. As a result of falling from the sled, he sustained a left shoulder collarbone injury.

The snowmobile continued down the trail until it crashed on its side. Sammut was transported out of the woods by Sheriff’s Department Rescue snowmobile sled to UPHS EMS who was waiting along County Road 492.

He sustained what are believed to be non-life threatening injuries and was transported to UPHS – Marquette for treatment. The damaged snowmobile was towed out of the woods by fellow members for the snowmobile party.

The Negaunee City Police Department and UPHS -Marquette EMS assisted on the scene.
