CRYSTAL FALLS — On October 7, 2017 the Iron County Sheriff Office responded to a cabin engulfed in flames on Fortune Lake in Crystal Falls Township. The cabin burned to the ground and was a total loss.
After an approximately 3 month investigation into the suspicious structure fire, the Iron County Sheriff’s Deputies have arrested two subjects believed to be responsible for starting the blaze. On January 30, 2018 Deputies arrested Troy Evert Jr, 21, and Rachael Kirschner, 25, both residents of Crystal Falls.
Evert and Kirschner were arraigned January 31, 2018, on 2nd Degree Arson charges and Conspiracy to Commit 2nd Degree Arson, both felony charges that carry a maximum penalty of 20 years in prison. The suspects are also charged with Lying to a Peace Officer during the course of an investigation, a misdemeanor with a maximum penalty of 2 years in prison.
Evert and Kirschner pled not guilty and are both currently being held in the Iron County Jail on $10,000 bond.
Deputies were assisted in the investigation by the Marinette County Sheriff’s Office, Niagara Police Department, the Federal Bureau of Investigation, Crystal Falls Fire Department, and Iron County Central Dispatch.
