MARINETTE, WI — One man was shot and killed by police early Thursday morning following an incident at a motel in Marinette.

Marinette County Sheriff’s Office reports that an incident involving a male suspect and a handgun happened around 12:10 a.m. It is unknown whether this incident was a robbery attempt or a domestic incident.

Investigators determined that the potential suspect was possibly at a residence on State Highway 64 in Peshtigo, WI. Officers from the Sheriff’s Office and Marinette City went to the location and saw a male subject enter a vehicle. The vehicle then drove westbound on Highway 64.

Officers followed and attempted to stop the vehicle at Schacht Road. The vehicle went partially into the ditch and the male suspect exited the vehicle armed with a handgun, which put the officers in danger. The suspect was shot and killed by the officers and was declared dead at the scene.

None of the officers involved were injured. The names of the deceased and the names of the officers involved are being withheld and will be released with other information about the incident at a later time.

The public is no longer in danger. State Highway 64 will be closed and detoured from County Road RW on the west and at the Marinette city limits on the east for several hours as the Wisconsin Department of Justice conducts their investigation.
