Dog perishes in structure fire

IRONWOOD — The Ironwood Department of Public Safety is investigating a structure fire that occurred Wednesday morning in the City of Ironwood.

Firefighters were dispatched to 401 N. Hemlock Street at 8:43 a.m. on a report of a structure fire. The home was completely engulfed in flames when emergency responders arrived.

Authorities learned the homeowners were not there, but two dogs were believed to be inside. Firefighters were able to rescue one of the dogs. The other dog perished in the fire.

Firefighters were on scene for five hours battling the blaze. The cause of the fire is unknown at this time and remains under investigation.
