Police chase ends when suspect’s vehicle goes airborne, striking multiple trees

MARQUETTE TOWNSHIP — The Marquette County Sheriff’s Office has released dash-cam video of a police chase that took place Saturday morning in Marquette Township.

The driver who fled from police was not injured in the accident. Just after one 1:15 a.m., Deputy Rushford observed a Chrysler Sedan cross the centerline and accelerate in the wrong lane on Grove Street.

The deputy attempted to initiate a traffic stop. That’s when the suspect’s vehicle took off, traveling 70 mph in the wrong lane.

The chase lasted a minute and ended when the driver disregarded a stop sign at County Road 492.

“He’s not going to make it; he just went into the trees. Get me some help,” said Rushford on audio heard on the dash cam. “Are you ok? You better be partner. What’s the problem tonight?” Rushford asked the suspect when he approached the vehicle.

The driver of the sedan, a 22-year-old Negaunee man, was not injured in the crash. He was lodged on charges of operating while intoxicated and fleeing/eluding police.

His name won’t be released until he’s arraigned.
