Three injured in three vehicle accident
PORTAGE TOWNSHIP– Sunday morning a three vehicle accident in Portage Township sent all three injured drivers to the hospital.
Around 10:30 a.m. Sunday a 52-year-old Wisconsin man Darcy Way crossed the center line, while heading Eastbound on M-26 near Canal Road. Way’s car then sideswiped a car heading Westbound, driven by 76-year-old Hancock woman Linda Belote. Way’s vehicle continued on, striking another vehicle head on, driven by 60-year-old Laurium woman Sharon Waarala.
All three drivers were taken to UP Health System Portage by Mercy Ambulance. Belote was treated and released and Waarala was admitted with non-life threatening injuries. Way was airlifted to the university of Michigan Health System by Valley Med Flight.
According to Calumet Police it was later learned Way suffered a medical emergency causing him to cross the center line.
The Houghton City Police Department, Hancock City Police Department, Michigan Tech University Public Safety, Houghton Fire Department, Hurontown Fire Department, Mercy Ambulance, and Superior Service Towing all assisted at the scene.
