Weather, water conditions delay BLP engine shipment

MARQUETTE — The three engines that will power the new Marquette Energy Center are currently docked in Sault Ste. Marie.

Officials with the Marquette Board of Light and Power tell ABC 10 that the barge carrying the engines arrived in Sault Ste. Marie Sunday evening from Escanaba. Due to high winds and waves projected in today’s forecast, officials are holding off moving the barge until Tuesday.

The tugboat Nickelena will bring the engines from the Soo Locks to Marquette. Moving at a speed of nine knots, or 10 mph, it will take the Nickelena approximately 18 hours to deliver the engines to Marquette.
Once the barge arrives in Marquette, Wright Street will be closed from Lakeshore Boulevard to east of the Superior Dome for a couple of days.
