QUINNESEC — A paper mill in the Upper Peninsula recently received one of Michigan’s most prestigious safety awards.

Verso Paper Corporation’s Quinnesec Mill was awarded the Voluntary Protection Program Star Award from the Michigan Occupational Safety and Health Administration. Officials say the award is the state’s highest recognition for workplace safety and health.

The mill employs over 400 workers. Mill leaders credit new initiatives, engaged employees, and a system for assessing progress as factors contributing to the site’s safety.
