UPDATE: Slick roads cause multiple vehicle accidents

UPDATE — 9:00 a.m. Friday, November 20th, 2015 (EST)

Cold and snowy weather made its return to Upper Michigan Thursday afternoon. The roads went from clear and dry to slushy and ice covered in a hurry.

Around 6:30 Thursday night, police responded to a couple of accidents in Ely Township. Nine different vehicles were involved in those incidents. Police officers throughout Marquette County responded to at least 24 accidents in a two hour span.

In Negaunee Township, eight accidents were reported between Brickyard Road and Midway Drive. The Marquette County Road Commission was busy throughout the night and the early morning hours spreading salt on the roads to get them ready to go for this morning’s commute.

Thankfully, no major injuries were reported in any of the accidents.

UPDATE — 8:00 p.m. Thursday November 19th, 2015 (EST)

This evening’s light snowfall created some issues for drivers on US–41 in Ely Township.

The accident occurred near Aspen Ridge School Road. Marquette County Sheriff’s deputies say two vehicles collided head–on and a red pick–up truck ended up in the ditch in an attempt to avoid the accident.

None of the passengers were seriously injured. Deputies were assisted by the Ishpeming Township Police and Fire Department.
The cause of the accident is still under investigation.

The roads are slick tonight from the recent snowfall, so make sure you’re leaving enough time to get to your destination safely.

MARQUETTE — We currently have reporters on the scene at different accidents in the central Upper Peninsula. Multiple vehicles have skidded off the highway into ditches.

Reports of accidents are in Ishpeming along US-41, and in Marquette near McCullen Ave.

Be cautious of emergency vehicles and lane closures. The roads are very slick tonight. Drivers are advised to slow down and drive carefully.

At this time, there are no reports of serious injuries.
