MSP warns of ongoing scam

NEGAUNEE — Members from the Michigan State Police and Sheriff’s Department’s throughout the Upper Peninsula received a multitude of calls today from residents reporting an ongoing phone scam.

The fraudulent phone calls are made from a party claiming to be from the IRS. MSP Troopers would like to remind members of the community of some clear cut signs that a phone call is a scam.

“The IRS does not contact citizens who have tax problems via telephone,” said Sgt. Kevin Dowling with the Michigan State Police – Negaunee Post, “secondly they don’t use fear and intimidation tactics to get financial information such as a credit card number or banking account information and require immediate payment to avoid some sort of threat of arrest.”

Police officers encourage citizens to hang up immediately.
They say not to give any personal information or call back numbers left in voice mail messages regarding this IRS scam attempt.
