ALGER COUNTY — Dangerous conditions are expected for swimmers Thursday along Lake Superior in Alger County.

The National Weather Service Marquette office reports that high waves approaching the shore in rapid succession and powerful channels of water moving quickly from the shore can pose a threat to swimmers. They say people should avoid swimming in high waves, near river mouths, and near breakwalls.

Particularly dangerous areas include exposed regions of Grand Marais Harbor, the Grand Sable Dunes and Miners Beach at the Pictured Rocks National Lake Shore, and Au Train Bay. Current-related fatalities and rescues have occurred in those locations in the past.
