UPDATE: 911 service returns for cell phones in Copper Country
UPDATE — 8:45 a.m. July 16, 2015 (EDT)
Michigan State Police at the Negaunee Post report that 911 service has been restored to Verizon cell phone customers in Houghton and Keweenaw Counties.
KEEWEENAW — Verizon customers in Keeweenaw and Houghton counties had some trouble getting phone calls out today.
The Michigan Public Safety Communication System says that there was a fiber optic cable cut near Bumbletown Road. This caused a cell service outage in Keeweenaw County and northern Houghton County.
The outage also prevents access to 911 services by cellphone. Until service is restored, 911 can still be reached by traditional land line phones. Frontier and Verizon are working on the problem and hope to have it fixed soon.
Other cell carriers shouldn’t be affected.
