Driver taken into custody after one-vehicle crash

OSCEOLA TOWNSHIP — One man was taken into custody after a one-vehicle crash in Osceola Township Sunday morning.

Deputies from the Houghton County Sheriff’s Department say the accident happened around 5:00 a.m. on Upper Point Mills Road near Lower Point Mills Road. A 23-year-old downstate man was driving westbound when he veered off the roadway. His vehicle rolled several times, struck a utility pole, and then left the scene.

Deputies located the vehicle and its occupants about a mile and a half from the scene on Homestead Road. Both the driver and his male passenger were transported to UP Health System – Portage, where they were treated and released. Deputies say the driver was taken into custody and lodged at the Houghton County Jail for suspicion of operating while intoxicated.

The Houghton County Sheriff’s Department was assisted at the scene by the Dollar Bay Fire Department and First Responders, Mercy Ambulance, and UPPCO.
