Copper Country students give back to kids through book drive
HOUGHTON — The Youth Advisory Council of the Keweenaw Community Foundation held its annual book drive last week, and on Monday the group was getting ready to send the books out to children across the Copper Country.
The book drive was done in conjunction with the U.P. Kids organization, and those involved with the program will receive the books as a gift for Christmas.
The final step is organizing the books by grade so they can be distributed accordingly. Members of the council were overwhelmed with the turnout, which proves how much the community cares about its youth.
“Reading is such an important part of growing up and just being a kid,” Houghton High School senior Elise Cheney-Makens said. “Reading teaches so many important lessons and we just want to give back to our community.”
They received many donations, including from schools and local bookstores. The books will be delivered during Christmastime through the U.P. Kids organization.
