U.P. unemployment rate declines to 9.1%
The unemployment picture in the Upper Peninsula is more positive now than it was a year ago.
The U.P.’s jobless rate is still high, at 9.1% in April, but the Michigan Department of Technology, Management and Budget says the region’s unemployment rate was 10.3% in April 2013.
The agency released seasonally unadjusted April figures for every county in the state today. Dickinson County had the lowest rate of any county in the U.P. at 7%.
Mackinac County, at 17.8%, had the highest jobless rate not only in the U.P., but in the entire state. The county’s economy is so heavily centered around summer tourism that it frequently has the state’s lowest unemployment rate during the summer and the highest rate the remainder of the year.
