Fuel truck overturns in Hancock
A fuel truck overturned in Hancock early this morning. The accident happened at about 8:10 a.m. on U.S. 41 near Ethel Avenue. Several fire departments, the Hancock Police Department, the Houghton County Sheriff and the Michigan State Police are on the scene.
Because of the crash, police say they expect the highway to remain closed for several hours.
Update: Evacuations in Hancock because of the fuel spill – Ohio and Michigan to Summit and Fourth, Ethyl Avenue to Ingot Street. Residents are asked to leave the area. A shelter has been set up at the Church of the Resurrection. Northbound and southbound traffic on U.S. 41 is being rerouted.
The tanker is leaking and could contain up to 7,500 gallons of fuel. There are concerns that the fuel could have gotten into the storm sewer, and perhaps the sanitary sewer. So homes in the surrounding blocks have been evacuated for the time being.
The cause of the crash could be excessive speed, according to witnesses on the scene.
