New scholarship created for a MAPS senior
MARQUETTE — One senior high school student athlete will be earning the first scholarship for Type 1 Diabetic Athletes in the Marquette Area.
The U.P. Diabetes Outreach Network (UPDON) has partnered with Marquette Area Public Schools (MAPS) Education Foundation to create a scholarship for a Marquette Area Public School senior.
The scholarship will go to someone who is living with or whose life has been impacted by Type 1 Diabetes.
“My son is a Type 1 Diabetic, he’s a freshman this year and played soccer and we were just thinking of other ways to help promote diabetes awareness, first of all, and help a student–athlete with diabetes attain a scholarship” said UPDON member, Kristen Cambensy.
“It’s hard enough to be a player on a team without having to fight the effects of Type 1 Diabetes and I think it’s just something that we really– we really wanted to support that” said Judy Vonck, board member for the MAPS Education Foundation. “We know how hard that can be for a young person. So, we’re really thrilled to be a part of it.”
On Monday, a benefit dinner was hosted at Vango’s that began at 4pm and will end at 8pm.
