MARQUETTE — The UP Health System (UPHS) Marquette has officially been re-certified as a level 2 trauma center.

UPHS Marquette has been a level 2 trauma center for the last 12 years and is the only level 2 trauma center in all of the Upper Peninsula.

Level 2 means that they are the second highest trauma center in terms of what can be done at the hospital. Level 1 is the highest

“Being a trauma center is a way of caring for patients, it’s not the actual emergency department and that’s a pretty common misconception” said Trauma Physician Assistant, Jodi McCollum.  “It’s how we care for patients from EMS all the way through rehab. It’s protocols and looking at every single patient that comes through our doors and how we can better improve their care.”

Achieving verification means that the hospital voluntarily met criteria that improves the standard of care outlined by the American College of Surgeons’ Committee.
