UPDATE: Pembine woman dies as result of injuries sustained in accident, hospital issues response

Dickinson County Healthcare System CEO/Administrator John Schon has released a statement in response to the Marinette County Sheriff’s Office news release stating that a 66 year-old Nancy L. Ross of Pembine, Wisconsin died from internal injuries she sustained from a traffic accident.

The statement is as follows:

“Our deepest sympathy is extended to the Ross family. DCHS was unaware of the coroner’s report until we learned from the recent press release that was distributed to the media yesterday morning by the Marinette County Sheriff’s Department. The matter was immediately referred to our Medical Staff President, who, in accordance with our Hospital’s established policies and  procedures, commissioned a medical staff leadership Peer Review of the case to thoroughly investigate all of the details surrounding the care provided to Mrs. Ross at the Hospital’s  Emergency Department.

DCHS’s initial findings reveal neither the coroner nor the medical examiner requested copies of medical or treatment records from DCHS nor has DCHS received a copy of the autopsy report so we cannot comment on the reported conclusions reached by the medical examiner. DCHS records indicate additional testing and admittance to the Hospital for further observation were offered in this case; however, DCHS respects the wishes and decisions of our patients  regarding their desired level of care including the right to decline further medical attention at our facilities. DCHS will share the results of our Medical Staff leadership’s review with Marinette County authorities to supplement their investigation as they deem appropriate.

Once again, on behalf of our healthcare system, I extend our heartfelt condolences to the Ross family and we are very sorry for their loss.”

AMBERG, WIS. — A 66 year-old woman died as a result of injuries she sustained from a March 16th accident on U.S. Highway 141.

On March 16th, deputies from the Marinette County Sheriff’s Office responded to a three-vehicle crash on U.S. Highway 141 in the town of Amberg. Multiple persons were transported to Dickinson County Memorial Hospital in Iron Mountain, Michigan. All of these people were treated and release, including 66 year-old Nancy L. Ross.

That same evening, Pembine Rescue Squad was paged to a residence in Pembine for a female who collapsed and was unresponsive. The female, identified as Ross, died at the scene.

Following an autopsy on Ross, the Sheriff’s Office and the coroner learned this week that she died as a result of internal injuries sustained from the accident. According to Marinette County Sheriff Jerry Suave, this is considered a traffic fatality and it is the first traffic fatality in Marinette County for 2018.

The Marinette County Deputy Coroner, Pembine and Wausaukee Rescue Squads, Amberg Fire, Beacon Ambulance, Marinette County Highway Department and the Wisconsin State Patrol assisted on the scene.
