Four snowmobilers rescued after breaking through ice
ALGER COUNTY — Four subjects were rescued from Grand Island over the weekend after they broke through the ice while snowmobiling.
On Saturday around 10:45 a.m., the Alger County Sheriff’s Office responded to a report that four snowmobilers broke through the ice near the east channel of Grand Island. The report indicated that all subjects were able to pull themselves from the water and make it to Grand Island.
The Alger County Sheriff’s Rescue “21” unit was able to extricate all persons from Grand Island by means of hovercraft. All subjects were treated by Alger EMS and were released without any injuries.
The Pictured Rocks National Park Service also assisted on the scene.
The Alger County Sheriff’s Office is issuing a warning to all people that ice conditions near Grand Island and the east channel are very weak. The department advises that people entering the ice should use extreme caution.
