A 19-year-old woman was pronounced dead on scene this morning following a two car accident on US-41 in Ishpeming.

The accident took place in front of the Ishpeming Family Dollar store shortly before 10:30 a.m. The Ishpeming Police say the woman was turning left out of the store parking lot between two National Guard trucks. The trucks were both in the eastbound outside lane and were stopped for a red light. When she tried to move to the westbound side, an eastbound dump truck that was approaching the stoplight in the inside lane hit her. The young woman died at the scene.

The dump truck driver, a 46-year-old Marquette man, was treated at Bell Hospital for minor injuries and released. Police are still investigating the crash, but they say their preliminary findings indicate that the young woman was at fault.

The names of the drivers are not being released until after their families are notified.

The Marquette County Sheriff’s Department, Marquette County Rescue 131, Bell EMS, and Michigan State Police from both the Negaunee and Iron Mountain Posts assisted at the scene.
