The Portage Lake District Library hopes to encourage more than just reading this summer.
The library is hosting its first “Paddle the Portage Event” on Thursday as a part of its Summer Reading Program. The event is a partnership between the Library, the Keweenaw Land Trust, and Michigan Tech’s Outdoor Adventure Program.
Boaters will launch from the east Houghton Waterfront Park.
Safety and paddle instructions will be provided.
Michigan Tech will supply ten boats for those who register for the three separate time blocks.
But—people are encouraged to bring their own boats.
The event is free, but participants must be registered.
A youth paddle will begin at 3:30, with an adult paddle, following at 5:30.
Youth paddlers must have a signed liability waiver from a parent or guardian at drop off.
