Presque Isle Power Plant demolition paused due to excessive dust

MARQUETTE — Demolition at the Presque Isle Powerplant will have to pause, due to excessive dust.

The Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes and Energy, or EGLE, said it received a complaint about dust being kicked up from demolition.

After investigation, it was found that the baghouse, which filtered emissions for the plant, was creating the dust. EGLE has directed the demolition company to provide the state a “dust plan” for the project.

“We take our commitment to our community and environment very seriously,” said Amy Jahns, a representative of WE Energies. “There is no indication there is a health risk to the community. However, we are working with EGLE and other stakeholders on additional measures to address the matter.”

EGLE officials said WE Energies will need to cover the baghouse to prevent the wind from picking up any further dust.
