Young man rescued and escorted off dangerous ice on Munising Bay
MUNISING — The Munising City Police received a call for an Ice Rescue on Munising Bay on January 21, 2020.
The call was made by 17-year-old James Zielinski, who was in need of rescuing after finding himself in a dangerous situation out on the ice. Zielinski said that the ice near the Munising City Dock was beginning to crack as he was attempting to get to shore.
The Munising City Police responded to the subject that was located 50 feet east of the Munising City dock. The Alger County Rescue 21 team was called to respond to the incident. The team was able to extricate the subject by utilizing the Rapid Deployment Craft.
Zielinski was escorted safely off the ice and taken to an Alger County Ambulance where he was treated for low body temperatures. He was released to his father at the scene. The Alger County Sheriff’s Office would like to remind all people venturing out onto the ice to use extreme caution.
