Citation issued in Ishpeming School Bus crash last month

ISHPEMING — The Ishpeming Police Department has decided who was at fault for a school bus crash last month at the corner of US-41 and Hickory Street.

In a news release Thursday morning, Police Chief Steven Snowaert says the woman driving the passenger car that hit the school bus, 25-year-old Jamie Rosten, will be cited for careless driving. Snowaert says the posted speed limit on US-41 is 45 mph, and investigators determined Rosten was going faster than the speed limit and forfeited her right of way.

Snowaert says the determination was made after reviewing interviews of witnesses, evidence collected and evaluated at the scene, and evidence and expertise given by the Michigan State Police Traffic Crash Reconstruction Unit.

The crash happened at 7:55 a.m. on Sept. 19. An Ishpeming Public School bus full of elementary students was northbound on Hickory, crossing US-41, when Rosten’s westbound Dodge Avenger hit the bus near the rear wheels. The bus spun and hit a utility pole.
