UPDATE: August 2, 2018 at approximately 9:51 a.m. — The Michigan State Police Calumet Post have released an update on the crash that occurred on US-41 near Golf Course Road in Osceola Township in Houghton County on July 7th.

28-year-old, Justin Beigh, was arraigned on Wednesday, August 1, on charges of a moving violation causing serious impairment of a body function.

The victims involved in this incident were Hancock residents John and Marnieann Polkky.


OSCEOLA TOWNSHIP — The Michigan State Police Calumet Post is providing an update on an incident that occurred on July 7th on US-41 near Golf Course Road in Osceola Township in Houghton County.

Two Hancock residents were struck head on while driving their motorcycle northbound. The vehicle that struck them was being driven by a 28-year-old Calumet man who swerved to avoid a stopped vehicle attempting to turn left onto Golf Course Road. The impact resulted in life-threatening and serious injuries to the female passenger on the motorcycle.

Investigation into the incident revealed that the 28-year-old man was distracted by his cellphone while driving. The Houghton County Prosecutor charged the man with a moving violation, causing serious impairment of a body function, which is a misdemeanor. He was arrested on Thursday, July 26th and released on bond. His name is being withheld pending arraignment.

Troopers from the Michigan State Police remind drivers to be conscientious of distractions while driving. Drivers who engage in distracted driving put their lives and others at risk.
