UPDATE: Suspect taken into custody after raising gun at deputies arraigned

UPDATE: Tuesday, June 6th at 5:00 p.m.

The suspect that was taken into custody after raising a gun at Mackinac County deputies on Sunday was arraigned in 92nd District Court on Tuesday.

39 year-old James Avery Blevins of St. Ignace was charged with assault with intent to commit murder, felon in possession of a firearm while intoxicated, felon in possession of ammunition, dangerous weapon possession, felonious assault with a dangerous weapon, felony firearms and habitual offender third offense.

Blevins is currently being held at the Mackinac County Jail on a $500,000 bond.

The deputies involved are on administrative leave while the final elements of the investigation are completed. Deputies are expected to return to full duty by Thursday.


MACKINAC COUNTY — On Sunday, June 3rd at about 6:30 P.M. Deputies from the Mackinac County Sheriff’s Office were called to a residence to investigate a report of a felon in possession of a gun with children in the home.

When the two deputies arrived at the residence, a male subject appeared and leveled his long gun at the deputies. One of the deputies fired his weapon and struck the suspect in the hand. He was taken into custody and transported to McLaren Northern Michigan Hospital for treatment of non-life threatening injuries.

Search warrants were obtained for the residence. Several charges are being sought. This investigation is ongoing; The Michigan State Police Crime Lab and detectives were requested to investigate the incident.
