M-553 re-opens following fatal two-car accident
SANDS TOWNSHIP — One person is dead and several others were taken to the hospital following a two-car accident on M-553 Tuesday morning.
At approximately 7:55 a.m., troopers from the Michigan State Police Negaunee Post were dispatched to a two-vehicle personal injury accident on M-553 just south of Olsen Road.
A 2005 Mercury Montego driven by 18 year-old Marcus Trujillo of Fennville, Michigan was traveling southbound on M-553 when the driver lost control of the vehicle. The car traveled into the northbound lane, directly into the path of a northbound 2007 Chrysler Town and County driven by 41 year-old Peter Anderson of Gwinn.
Eighteen year-old Benjamin Johnson of Norway was in the passenger’s seat of the Montego and was pronounced dead at the scene. All of the other occupants of both vehicles were transported to UPHS – Marquette for treatment of their injuries.
The incident remains under investigation by the State Police. Troopers were assisted at the scene by Forsyth Township Fire/EMS, Sands Township Fire/EMS, Marquette County Rescue Unit 131, Marquette County Sheriff’s Department and UPHS – Marquette EMS.
M-553 near Kelly Johnson Drive was closed for about three hours following the accident. The roadway has since been re-opened.
