Hovercraft used to rescue two people stranded on piece of ice

ESCANABA — Emergency crews in Delta County rescued two individuals today after they became stranded on ice flow on Portage Point.

The Delta County Sheriff’s Office responded to the scene just before 11:30 a.m. An icebreaker that went through the area broke away a piece of ice the two individuals were on.

The two people had several hundred yards of water on all sides of the ice. Emergency personnel rescued the individuals with a hovercraft.

They were brought safely back to good ice. No injuries were reported.
