Man allegedly flees scene after crashing into concession stand

NEGAUNEE — One man was taken into custody over the weekend after allegedly fleeing the scene after crashing into the Negaunee Football Field concession stand.

Negaunee City Police say Gerald Potvin, 33 of Negaunee, was arrested and charged with reckless driving, leaving the scene of an accident, and failing to report an accident, in connection to the incident that happened shortly after midnight on Sunday. Potvin’s vehicle was turning north onto South Hungerfourd Avenue from East Arch Street. The vehicle continued to turn left, going over the center of the road and the curbing before crossing the sidewalk and striking the east side of the concession stand, leaving behind what police are calling ‘considerable damage.’

An eyewitness told police that a dark colored pickup truck was seen leaving the scene after striking the concession stand. Officers were able to locate that vehicle — which turned out to be registered to Potvin — on the 600 block of Everett Street. They made contact with the suspect at his residence. After further investigation, Potvin was taken into custody.

No injuries were reported. Alcohol is believed to have been a factor in the crash, and the investigation remains ongoing.
