Kayakers help rescue kayaker in distress
MARQUETTE — Two kayakers helped a fellow kayaker in distress Saturday afternoon in Marquette.
The Marquette City Fire Department was dispatched to the west side of Presque Isle Park just after 4:15 p.m. on a report of a kayaker in distress. Upon arrival, firefighters located the kayaker, who was in the water a 1/4 mile off shore.
Three rescue swimmers were deployed into the matter. Two other kayakers assisted the kayaker in distress. The rescue swimmers helped all three kayakers safely to shore.
The U.S. Coast Guard retrieved the swamped kayak in the bay. The rescued kayaker was not injured. The kayaker was wearing a PFD (Personal Floatation Device) while they were in the water.
