Stolen vehicle crashes into cemetery after pursuit
MARQUETTE — A Gwinn woman was arrested after allegedly crashing a stolen Jeep into a local cemetery.
Troopers from the Michigan State Police Negaunee Post say the incident happened around 4:30 a.m. Saturday morning. Troopers attempted to stop a 2003 Jeep, the driver of which was suspected of operating while intoxicated, on McClellan Avenue and US-41 in the City of Marquette.
The vehicle initially stopped when troopers activated their overhead lights, but as troopers approached on foot, the driver sped off on McClellan heading north. A pursuit of the suspect vehicle then began.
That pursuit ended when the vehicle crashed into the Holy Cross Cemetery. Troopers say the crash damaged several grave markers and the fencing around the cemetery. No injuries were reported.
The 20-year-old driver was taken into custody for operating while intoxicated, fleeing and eluding, unlawful driving away of an automobile, resisting and obstructing, and driving on a suspended license. Her name is being withheld pending her arraignment in Marquette County District Court.
Michigan State Police troopers were assisted at the scene by the Marquette City Police Department and NMU Public Safety.
