POWELL TOWNSHIP — A Marquette woman was taken to the hospital after a one-vehicle rollover crash in Powell Township Wednesday morning.

Marquette County Sheriff’s Deputies say the accident happened just after 11:00 a.m. on County Road 550 near County Road KJ. Thirty-one-year old Amanda Ruonaavara was headed south on 550 when she lost control of her vehicle on the partially slushy road. The vehicle left the side of the road, rolled, and hit a large utility pole, cracking it in half. The car came to a rest on its roof.

Two passersby rendered aid to the driver while summoning responders via 911. They were able to assist Ruonavaara out of the vehicle. Police say she was wearing a safety belt, but the car’s air bags did not deploy. Ruonavaara was transported to UP Health System – Marquette by ambulance. She was cited for driving too fast for conditions, having an expired license, and driving with a suspended license.

The crash remains under investigation. Sheriff’s Deputies were assisted at the scene by Powell Township Fire and EMS.
