CHOCOLAY TOWNSHIP — Two people had to be extricated from their vehicle after a two-car collision in Chocolay Township Wednesday afternoon.

Chocolay Township Police responded to the accident on the corner of US-41 and M-28 shortly after noon. Police say 20-year-old Tyler Juntunen of Lake Linden was driving on US-41 when he turned onto M-28 directly into the path of a second vehicle driven by 64-year-old Terry Debruyn of Skandia. The vehicles collided head-on.

Both Juntunen and his passenger were trapped in the vehicle and had to be extricated by the Chocolay Township Fire Department using the jaws of life. The two were transported to UP Health System – Marquette for treatment. Debruyn, the lone occupant of his vehicle, sought his own treatment.

Police say Juntunen was found at fault and issued a citation for failure to yield to oncoming traffic. Keweenaw Bay Tribal Police, the Marquette County Sheriff’s Department, and UP Health System EMS also assisted at the scene.
