LUDINGTON — The search for a man who jumped overboard from a freighter near downstate Ludington in Lake Michigan has been suspended.
U.S. Coast Guard Officials say the incident off the coast of Big Sable Point was reported around 2:00 a.m. Sunday morning. Crew members of the 989-foot Stewart J. Cort witnessed the man climb over the rail and jump from the ship.
They deployed life rings and began a systematic search for the man. Coast Guard Sector Lake Michigan dispatched a response boat and two helicopters to the area, completing eleven different searches covering seventy six nautical miles.
Commercial ships in the area also assisted in the search. Inclement weather is expected in the search area through Monday night.
