Former prison worker charged for allegedly soliciting assault

KINCHELOE — A former Aramark prison worker from the eastern U.P. will face charges for allegedly soliciting an inmate to help orchestrate another inmate’s assault.

Michigan Attorney General Bill Schuette announced Wednesday that his Criminal Division has charged 27-year-old Michael R. Young of Kincheloe with solicitation to commit assault with intent to cause great bodily harm.

According to a release from Schuette’s office, Young was employed by Aramark at the Kinross Correctional Facility in Chippewa County. In 2014, an inmate at that facility allegedly reported to the Michigan Department of Corrections that he was solicited by Young to find an inmate to assault another who was incarcerated at a different facility. Young allegedly told the inmate that the target prisoner was serving a sentence for the murder of one of Young’s relatives, and he offered the inmate tobacco products in return for his help.

Young was taken into custody in Kincheloe Tuesday and is housed in the Chippewa County Jail on $50,000 cash bond. He is scheduled to have a probable cause conference June 1st followed by a preliminary examination on June 10th. If convicted, Young could face up to five years in prison.
