UPDATE: Republic Township woman dies from gunshot wound

UPDATE 8:43 PM Monday, January 26, 2015 (EST) — The woman involved in an apparent accidental shooting in Republic Township Friday afternoon has died.

Troopers from the Negaunee post of the Michigan State Police say they responded to the home of 67-year-old Athena Engle after the shooting was reported shortly before 4:00 p.m. Engle had suffered a single gunshot wound in her left leg from a .38 caliber handgun. She had called 911 and reported that she accidentally shot herself in the leg. Engle was home alone at the time of the incident.

Engle was transported to UP Health System Marquette by UP Health System Bell EMS. She died there Saturday. An autopsy is scheduled to occur Monday morning. Troopers say they did not find any signs of foul play as a result of their investigation.

Republic Township EMS also assisted at the scene.


REPUBLIC — A woman is recovering from a shooting that took place this afternoon in Republic. Information on exactly what happened is scarce at this point. But it happened at 5586 Dogwood Road in Republic shortly before 4 p.m.

Early reports are that a 53–year–old woman was shot in the leg. Michigan State Police from the Negaunee Post do not have any information available yet.

An ABC 10 Reporter was on the scene, and we will update this story as soon as possible.
