Success of MTU football, hockey teams brings business on campus

HOUGHTON — The Michigan Tech football team is in the playoffs for the second time in school history, and the men’s hockey team is ranked #1 in the country.

Sounds like things are looking up for the Huskies, and that includes sales at University Images, which sells all kinds of Michigan Tech apparel.

Store manager Mark Johnson said sales from here and the Campus Bookstore are up 15 to 20% and it’s all thanks to the boys out on the field and on the ice.

“It’s really been a boon for us. It’s great. There’s a lot of activity and excitement in the air and when they’ve been packing the stadium for hockey, it’s been great and football has been super too so we’re really pleased,” he said.

Hockey and football jerseys are hot-ticket items as well as keychains, assorted cups, and different style hats. Johnson said they have seen a lot more people from the community stop by to get themselves some of the black and gold.

“And we’ve always had the students here too and because of the success, they’re buying the hooded sweatshirts, which are out this time of year. And of course, we sell T-shirts all the time, too,” said Johnson.

So whether you’re getting something for a former Husky or even a future Husky, now is the best time to get in on the action going on at the MTU campus.
