Christians throughout the Upper Peninsula have made their way to church to observe the occasion of Good Friday.

Messiah Lutheran Church in Marquette is one of many churches around the world holding services today. Good Friday is a somber occasion marking Jesus Christ’s crucifixion and death.

“God in Christ bears the weight of the world, the sins of the world,” Messiah Lutheran Pastor David Van Kley said. “In suffering death, God also begins for us to overcome the power of death.”

But it’s also a time of somewhat mixed emotions, since the resurrection of Easter comes just two days later. Several other Marquette-area faith communities joined Messiah for an ecumenical service this afternoon.
