Ishpeming home invasion suspect awaiting arraignment

An Ishpeming man will be arraigned in Marquette on Wednesday on a home invasion charge after a suspected domestic assault led to a standoff with police.

The suspect’s name won’t be available until his arraignment, but the Ishpeming Police say he’s 33 years old. He also does not live in the home on the 1800 block of Hewitt Street where the alleged incident took place.

A woman called police late Monday morning to say that her boyfriend entered her home without permission and assaulted her. She got out of the house with minor injuries. The alleged victim told officers her boyfriend had been drinking and was making threats to kill people.

The Ishpeming Police also learned he may have been suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder and that there were several guns in the home. Officers couldn’t make contact with the suspect at first. They created a perimeter around the home and asked for help from the Michigan State Police Emergency Services Team.

“One of the prerequisites for getting them to help is that we have to have a warrant for a felony in hand,” Ishpeming Police Chief Dan Willey said. “I obtained a warrant for felony home invasion, first-degree.”

The Emergency Services Team broke away from a training exercise near the Ohio state line to respond to the standoff. An armored vehicle also drove 750 miles to respond to the scene. Once the suspect saw the armored vehicle approaching the house, he gave himself up peacefully shortly before 2:30 this morning.

“I know it’s an inconvenience for the people in the neighborhood, but we have limited officers; we have a lot to do,” Chief Willey said. “All in all, this worked out very well.” Hewitt Street was closed to traffic for more than 14 hours.

The suspect is in the Marquette County Jail on $10,000 bond. The Marquette County Sheriff’s Department, the Negaunee Police and the Ishpeming Township Police also assisted at the scene.
