Cause of New Year’s Day Marquette fire has been ruled undetermined

The investigation into a New Year’s Day fire at 535 East Michigan Street in Marquette is now closed. The cause has been ruled undetermined.

Investigators interviewed several witnesses who had been in contact with both the homeowner and the renter on the day of the fire. The Marquette Police Department looked into any suspicious events leading up to the incident, including an argument between the homeowner and his girlfriend. Investigators also collected evidence at the scene but were unable to determine an exact cause.

A fundraiser to help rebuild the Katona family’s home, which was completely destroyed by the fire, was held in January. You can still help by contributing to the GoFundMe account created for Andrea and her three-year-old son Mattyx.

You can also drop off basic household items like blankets or towels at Jessica & Company in Marquette or at U.P. Insurance in Negaunee.
