UPDATE: Delta County kayaker found dead in Little Bay De Noc

Michigan State Police have released the name of the Little Bay De Noc drowning victim.

Troopers from the Gladstone Post say Michael Edmund Waeghe, 48, of Gladstone drowned while kayaking with a friend early Friday morning. The nature and cause of the drowning is still being investigated.

According to the United States Coast Guard, alcohol was the leading factor in water-related deaths in 2012. That same year, operator inattention was the leading factor for water-related injuries. On the national level, drowning is the fifth leading cause of accidental death.

A Delta County man who went missing while kayaking with a friend in Brampton Township Friday has been found dead.

Troopers from the Gladstone Post of the Michigan State Police say the 48-year-old victim appears to have drowned in Little Bay De Noc. No other information about the nature of the drowning or the man’s identity is being released at this time as the incident remains under investigation.

Michigan State Police were assisted at the scene by Gladstone Public Safety, the Delta County Sheriff’s Department, Delta County Search and Rescue, the Gladstone Volunteer Fire Department, the U.S. Coast Guard, and the Delta County Air Ambulance.
